Cannabis Sustainability Work Group
In 2023, the Marijuana Enforcement Division took on facilitating Cannabis Sustainability Work Group meetings. The Cannabis Sustainability Work Group’s mission is to advance sustainability in the cannabis industry through policy recommendations, education, best practices, and dialogue between key stakeholders.
Members of the work group represent a variety of stakeholders, including cannabis business owners, consultants and contractors, state and local government representatives, and sustainability and policy experts. These meetings are open to the public (see information below about how to apply to serve as a work group member or join the meetings as a public attendee).
Each member of the work group participates in one of four committees:
- Executive
- Engagement
- Policy
- Education
In January 2025, the Cannabis Sustainability Work Group’s Policy Committee will be hosting two listening sessions on packaging waste. Each listening session will explore the following topics:

This guide was compiled by members of the Cannabis Sustainability Work Group and is intended to provide best practices for the sustainable operation of cannabis businesses. The MED did not draft or revise any part of the guide.

Co-hosted by the Marijuana Enforcement Division and the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE), the Science & Policy Forum is made up of a diverse work group of scientists, academics, business, and policy representatives, public health officials, state and local representatives, and other stakeholders.
